 | | 2005
This collection has been added because my monthly collections from 2005 were deleted when I was running out of space before I upgraded to premium. As I may have mentioned elsewhere I had a long sabbatical away from the railways, 20 years in fact, and when my interest was rekindled in May 2005 I had sold all of my old film SLR gear and only had a small digital camera. All of the shots in this collection were taken with said camera so the quality will be "less than perfect" but are included on my site to fill in the missing gap.

 | | Bo'ness Diesel Gala 27th & 28th September
The weather started off a little dull on the Saturday but the sun eventually put in an appearance but later scarpering & leaving the rain to slowly take over. Sundays weather was a little better with sun for most of the morning & into the early afternoon but, as expected, the rain arrived a little later & the punters thinned out rather quickly!

 | | Severn Valley Railway
Just a quick visit during the Steam Gala on 20th September
|
 | | HDR/Photoshop - Is it Art?
A few shots that have been tinkered with to some degree. I'm still not sure if I like them or not!
|
 | | The Kingdom of Fife Railway Open Day 14th September
Took a trip to Leven, Fife to visit the Kingdom of Fife Railway which was open to the public as a part of "Doors Open Days". I couldn't miss the rare chance to visit & also go hunting for the "forgotten" Class 26 in the Methil area.
It was a nice day all in all but think they could've been a little more organised.

Took a trip to Barnetby for a couple of days & was surprised to see a couple of mates there, Steve & Gav who had also made the trip down from Scotland. We had a good time, the weather could've been better but at least it didn't rain. The Whistle & Flute opposite the staion is highly recommended!

I travelled down from Scotland with 3 mates and had an enjoyable time at the Open Day on Saturday. The weather started off quite overcast but thankfully the sun broke through in the afternoon. Many thanks to the organisers & staff for making the trip so enjoyable.
|
 | | Summer Holiday 2008
After last years "Mega-Marathon" visiting nearly all preserved lines in the South West this year I was more considerate to my family & we stayed in Dawlish so they could have the beach & I could have the sea wall. On the way back from Long Marston open Day I decided to call in at Tyseley to see how some of the work was coming along.

Another well organised & well attended event at Long Marston with the weather adding to the enjoyment - I'm just glad it wasn't quite as hot as last year!
|
 | | Churnet Valley Railway, Cheddleton 6th June
While down south visiting family I went down to Cheddleton to take a few shots. I was especially looking forward to seeing 37075 after it's recent re-paint into Thornaby White-stripe Rail Blue - I wasn't disappointed!

|
 | | Bo'ness Diesel Gala - Saturday 26th April 2008
With only the home fleet in use today & the weather not promising much in the way of decent photo ops I wondered if the event would pull in the punters but I needn't have worried, there were plenty in attendance & the weather picked up in the afternoon.

|
 | | York 20th Feb
I took advantage of The Scotsman newspapers special offer to travel down to York in search of nostalgia - I found none! I hadn't spent a prolonged period of time at York since I was 14/15 but found that the wires & (obvious) lack of Deltics had taken away what I used to find appealling. It was nice to wander around the NRM with relatively few people in there though!
|
 | | Strathspey Railway 10th Feb
My wife & kids wanted a day out in Aviemore so I took the chance to visit the Strathspey Railway while we were there. We all had a pleasant time & it's well worth a visit.

 | | Personal Favourites 2007
Welcome to my pictorial round up of the year. It's just a collection of a few of my own personal faves from the year for varying reasons. A big thank you to all of the gen posters that have helped me to get my shots & also thanks to my good friends on the scot-rail forum for their encouragement, help & advice. For more detail of each shot please see relevant months collection.
Here's hoping everyone has a great 2008! Happy New Year!

|
 | | Bo'ness Diesel Gala - Sunday 30th September 2007
The debut of 37025 was a big crowd puller & it was named "Inverness TMD" on the Saturday, very apt. As usual, a great display of traction with 37175 also making it's "home" debut. RSG & 40145 were visiting again so it was full thrash all weekend!
|
 | | Corus Steelworks, Scunthorpe 29th Sept 2007
Simon Barratt, Malcolm Donnelly & myself had a trip down to Scunthorpe to visit the steelworks on the Appleby - Frodingham Railway Preservation Society tour & it was well worth the effort to drive down from Scotland. The site has around 100 miles of trackwork & the tour covers 16 miles of this with commentry via a tannoy which makes the tour even more interesting. A well recommended day out!
|
 | | The D7629 Show! (Foxfield Railway Diesel Gala 15th Sept 2007)
The Foxfield Railway, Blythe Bridge, Stoke-on-Trent held their Diesel Gala over the weekend 15th - 16th September & they had a special visitor, Mark Fowler's D7629 (25279) from Ruddington. This was the first time that a ex-BR loco had visited the line so it was a must to get down there to record the event. A big thank you goes out to Mark for the cab ride up the line on the Friday before the Gala. For more details about D7629 try this website: www.D7629.com

|
 | | Foxfield Railway
Having lived less than 1 mile away from the Foxfield Railway it's surprising that I've never really taken an interest in it. Now living in Scotland it's ironic that I can now appreciate what they have achieved & paid a visit recently (18th August 2007) to renew my aquaintence, pity the weather was dire! I will, of course, be a more regular visitor to this fantastic little railway in the future as I visit my parents who live nearby.
|
 | | Blackpool Trams
I've been going to Blackpool for day trips for over 40 years & have largely ignored the trams. On a recent visit I thought I'd take some pictures for a change.

|
 | | Summer Holiday 2007
My family & I went for a weeks holiday down in Devon/Cornwall & I figured I may get the chance to visit a couple of Preserved lines & some lineside spots on the National network. As it turned out I was able to get shots at the Avon Valley, East Somerset, West Somerset, Paignton & Dartmouth, South Devon, Lynton & Barnstaple, Bodmin & Wenford & Dartmoor Railways plus lineside shots at Cockwood Harbour, Dawlish & sea wall, Langstone Rock, Teignmouth, Par, St Blazey & Paignton! You could say I was a bit busy! ;-)
|
 | | DRS Open Day 7th July 2007
The weather threatened to be good & it was - briefly, soon after the gates opened the heavens opened too! Still, it was good when it wasn't raining & Chris D visiting from Oz had a good time which, when you've travelled so far, is quite important!
|
 | | July 2007
Crookedstane, Carlisle, Kingmoor & Float Viaduct.
|
 | | Long Marston Open Day 9th June 2007

|
 | | Caledonian Railway Sulzerfest 6th May
I've been lucky to some degree with the weather this year, especially if consider how bad it's been overall. Again, I was blessed with great weather for this Gala - it always helps to keep the family quiet too!

 | | Carlisle Overnighter 23rd/24th March 2007
Against my better judgement I decided to do an overnighter at Carlisle as 86101 was having its first run in preservation on the mainline the following day. It was a busy night, the cold wasn't really noticed partly due to meeting the Teesside Lads - Ant, Johnny & Carl plus Mike from Durham so the banter kept the sleep & cold at bay. It was worth it though - 101 looked stunning in the (very) early morning light!
|
 | | March 2007

 | | Surviving Prints
Having returned back to the hobby in June '05 after nearly 20 years away I was looking forward to seeing my old collection of prints only to realise they had been discarded when moving house! The earlier photos weren't much good, typical kids photography of the time using 126/110 cameras in the main so most were blurred or were terribly composed. Having said that, I would love to have them back regardless of quality as the photos captured many things that are long gone now - 71/74's on the southern, 76's at work, 50's in Devon, 44's on the Stoke - Derby line, Deltics on the ECML, the list goes on! The photos in this collection only survived because they weren't filed properly & turned up in various family albums instead. I hope (against all hope) that one day I'll find all of the negatives in a dusty long forgotten box tucked up at the back of the shed/garage/attic but I'm not holding my breath! Consequently I keep virtually all of my shots these days & take shots of anything & everything on the Railway because one day it will be all gone.
Today's dross is tomorrow's nostalgia!
If anyone can supply any of the missing numbers of locos in these shots I'd be grateful.

 | | Crewe At Night
As a kid I used to spend hours & hours at Crewe, there was always something going on, Locos coming on/off shed, being fuelled, shunting all around the station & more. Those days are long gone now but there are still things to photograph - just not as many things, that's all.
|
 | | Peak Rail Gala 23rd Sept 2006

 | | Healey Mills & East Lancs Railway 31st August
Unfortunately my family & I had to travel down to Manchester for a funeral on 31st August. After a rather sombre morning we headed off to Healey Mills to view the Yard & it's contents & then called into The East Lancs Railway on the way home. The weather was awful to be honest but I still enjoyed what was on offer.
|
 | | Midland Railway Centre, Peak Rail & Peak Forest 26th August 2006
I travelled down south to see my Parents & took the opportunity to visit Butterley & Swanwick Junction on the Midland Railways 25th Anniversary. I hadn't been for 20 years or so & it looks totally different from what I remember. Also had a spur of the moment visit to Peak Rail for the shunters but unfortunately most were covered with tarps. They will be all on show on the Gala day, 23rd - 24th Sept I'm assured.
